Authorities Investigate as FBI Deems Incident a Terrorist Attack; Suspect Dead After Shootout with Police

In another car-related holiday terror attack, this time in New Orleans, a pickup truck was driven into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street, resulting in at least ten deaths and over thirty injuries. The attack, which occurred early Wednesday morning during New Year’s celebrations, was swiftly declared a terrorist act by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and is being investigated as such by the FBI.

The vehicle, identified with a Texas license plate, reportedly crossed into the U.S. from Mexico at Eagle Pass, Texas, two days before the attack. The suspect, who has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, engaged in a shootout with police officers after fleeing the vehicle and was killed at the scene.

Law enforcement officials also discovered multiple explosive devices at the location, which appeared to be operational. Two officers sustained injuries during the incident, though they remain in stable condition.

The attack has drawn national attention, with President-elect Trump and President Biden both issuing statements condemning the violence and pledging federal support for the investigation.

Security measures around the French Quarter were reportedly being updated at the time of the attack, with old vehicle barriers being replaced. Questions have arisen about how the truck breached the perimeter and whether sufficient security protocols were in place.
